What is Day of Service?
The NCCU Alumni Association, Inc. launched the Day of Service on July 9, 2010, during the Alumni Association’s national convention and University’s Centennial Celebration. Alumni who were in town for the convention, as well as those lived in nearby cities, volunteered at various sites such as on NCCU’s campus at several administrative/departmental offices, athletics, and Centennial Gardens; John Avery Boys & Girls Club (now Boys & Girls Club of Durham & Orange Counties); and Habitat for Humanity. Over the years, more community partners have been added to the Day of Service. They are the Diaper Bank of North Carolina and Housing for New Hope, Inc. Now, that the Day of Service has passed 10 years of consistent service, it is the Alumni Association’s signature community service program.

NCCU Office of Community Engagement and Service (CES) serves as the University’s office for engaging students with the community by finding opportunities for these students to serve, provides support to students such as the food pantry, and promotes health awareness initiatives. It also monitors and tracks service hours students accumulate to ensure the 120 hours are met to complete graduation requirements. https://www.whenweallvote.org/; https://2020census.gov/en.html; https://compact.org/who-we-are/; https://www.commoncause.org
Boys & Girls Club of Durham & Orange Counties is committed to promoting safe, positive and inclusive environments for all. Boys & Girls Clubs of America supports all youth and teens – of every race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ability, socio-economic status, and religion – in reaching their full potential. Alumni have enjoyed interacting with the club members over years by assisting with arts and crafts, discussing reactions and views of movies/documentaries with teens, and playing games that promote team building and exhibiting good sportsmanship.
Habitat for Humanity helps families build and improve places to call home. They believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. NCCU has built six Habitat houses for a former employee and members of the community who live near campus and is now working on the seventh! Alumni Association members have volunteered at various housing projects in the city and chapters have given contributions toward NCCU builds.
Housing for New Hope, Inc. provides housing and hope to the most vulnerable neighbors by empowering and assisting them in finding and maintaining housing – a front door to call their own. This organization offers four areas of support: 1) Outreach and Case Management; 2) Affordable Housing; 3) Rapid Rehousing (intervention designed to help individuals and families quickly exit homelessness and return to permanent housing); and 4) Supportive Housing (housing intervention that combines non-time-limited affordable housing assistance for people with disabling conditions and have experienced chronic homelessness).
Due to COVID-19 and its impact to society, the Alumni Association will provide a meal to support these unsung heroes serving the needs of residents in Durham, and particularly the community immediately around the campus.
